This game is all about real-time command simulation, and it all started with Sid Meier’s Sid Meier’s Gettysburg back in 1997. Unlike the old-school wargames with hex grids and dice rolls, this game throws you straight onto a 3D battlefield where combat happens in real-time, and you can only pause when you need to. Plus it came with a multiplayer mode that’s still awesome today.

The genre kept evolving with Sid Meier’s Antietam in 1998, which introduced players to the challenging terrain of Sharpsburg and included other epic battles like South Mountain and Crampton’s Gap. Then in 2001, Breakaway Games took things further with Waterloo: Napoleon’s Last Battle, adapting the game engine for the Napoleonic Wars. This was followed by Austerlitz: Napoleon’s Greatest Victory in 2002, wrapping up the Sid Meier engine’s era.
